Title

Ode by Guerlain marks the final perfumery effort of Jacques Guerlain. Joined by his grandson, and the heir to his empire, Jean-Paul Guerlain, Ode bears both of their marks, signalling a transition in Guerlain's history. A combination of the more somber atmosphere of Jacques' wartime era with Jean-Paul's more modern, energetic creations, Ode's 1955 release marked the turn of a page. Categorized as a Floral-Aldehydic fragrance, Ode offers accords of  powdery, white floral, iris, rose, aldehydic, fresh, musky, floral, woody, and earthy notes.

Wearers often cite Ode's similarity in character to the perfumes of Jean Patou, especially the iconic Joy, and to Liu, the 1929 creation of Jacques Guerlain. The original bottle that housed the extrait, like Liu's, was inspired by American skyscrapers - a tall, curved flacon that went on to house other Guerlain mainstays like Vol de Nuit, Shalimar, and Mitsouko. The eau de cologne was put into a smaller, square splash bottle, made to fit into a train case, and thus called the "travel flacon," and bearing the iconic circular purple label that identifies the later Montre bottles of Guerlain eau de colognes. Ode was later moved into the iconic Montre bottles in its eau de cologne form in the 1960's and 1970's.
